Your initial laser hair removal consultation is the most important part of your treatment, on your consultation we check through your medical history, assess your skin and hair to ensure you are suitable for laser and answer any questions you may have regarding the treatment.

We want to make sure you have all the relevant information to allow you to make an informed decision that laser is right for you.  After your consultation you should be equipped with all the knowledge you need to understand how laser works and the science behind it.

Your patch test is also vitally important as it allows us to test your skin for any sensitivity from the laser and also will ensure you are a suitable candidate for treatment.

If you are putting your trust in us and investing in laser hair removal treatment we feel it’s only right that we invest the time to explain things fully and make sure all your questions are answered.

What Makes Me Suitable For Laser

Most Importantly, Dark Hair

Hair must contain some level of brown pigment (melanin) to respond to laser, blond, grey or red hair will not respond therefore cannot be treated. It is important to allow some hair to be present in the treatment area on the day of your consultation to ensure your hair is suitable for treatment.

Laser will work best when thick, brown/black hair is present in the treatment area as there is a bulk source of melanin contained within the hair making it easier for the laser to successfully target the hair.

Skin Type Doesn’t Matter But

And there is a but, it does take more sessions to achieve a result on a darker skin.  Because a darker skin will contain Melanin the laser will absorb into the skin and hair at the same rate and cause the skin to pigment and darken if too high an energy is used.  A person with a darker skin will typically need more sessions than someone with a paler skin.  People with pale skin and dark hair will typically achieve the best results in a faster time frame.

Medication

Many medications are suitable for use when receiving laser treatment.  Some medications cause the skin to become photosensitive (sensitive to light) and cause changes at a cellular level within the skin so therefore cannot be taken while having laser treatment.  If you are currently taking any medication and would like to know if you are suitable please contact us by clicking here and we can confirm if you are suitable or not.   In certain circumstances we may advise you to inform your GP that you are starting treatment and ask for a letter of consent to begin treatment, this is to ensure we are 100% safe to proceed.  We operate under strict guidelines and if your medical circumstances change during the course of your treatments we may ask for written consent from your GP to ensure we are safe to proceed with further treatments, this depends on the severity of the treatments that would be prescribed by your doctor.

We are proud to hold a 100% safety record and at no stage do we ever compromise your safety – at Urbana your safety comes first.

Here is a list of just SOME medications the increase photo sensitivity and if taking them would make you unsuitable at this time.

Ro-Accutane, Minocycline (Acne Medications) St John’s Wort, Dianette (Oral Contraceptive).

No Tan Present, Real Or Fake

Your skin must be free from Tan (including fake tan) to be safely treated with laser. This is essential to ensure you receive a safe and effective treatment.

When we tan our skin cells produce Melanin, this is a very important process as it protects our internal DNA structures beneath our skin.

The light, heat and energy omitted by the lasers we use targets and absorbs into Melanin,  the Laser cannot tell the difference between Melanin in the hair and stimulated Melanin (from tanning) in the skin, the laser will attract to the pigment in the exact same way and will heat up the two structures to the exact same temperature causing damage to the fragile skin structure.  Melanocyte cells are located in the basal or deepest layer of your skin where the hair is also located, if a treatment is performed when melanocytes have been activated (from tanning) the laser will stimulate the pigment and bring it to the surface of the skin causing the surface of the skin to darken and become pigmented. It will also heat the water content in the skin up and cause the skin to blister.

If you are undergoing a course of treatments with us and happen go on holidays in-between your treatments we will insist on a re-patch test approx 8-12 weeks after you return from holiday.  For safety reasons we will not continue with any further treatment unless this patch test has been done and is deemed safe after a 3-4 day period depending on the depth of tan.    As laser penetrates deep into the skin it does sometimes take that period of time to show on the surface of the skin.

Sensitive Skin Can Be Treated But

Sensitive skins can be treated very effectively but with lower laser energy settings.  Because we would always insist on a patch test before starting laser we are able to establish a suitable setting for your skin type, this will put your mind at ease to as it will determine if your sensitive skin is suitable or not.

If you have this skin type you may notice that you will be sensitive for a little longer than the usual 24-48hr, but any side effects from the laser mainly erythema (redness) or follicular odema (swelling of the follicles) should subside over the subsequent days after treatment.  It is important if you notice any changes or prolonged effects from laser lasting on your skin that you make us aware so that we can ensure your skin safety.

Waxing, Say Goodbye Forever

If you are thinking about starting laser treatment you will need to say farewell to your monthly wax.  You will need to allow the follicles in the treatment area to fill with hair for approx 6 weeks before starting treatment.  When you wax or pluck the hair is completely removed from the follicle in order for the laser to be effective hair follicles must have hair present so that they can be targeted.  If you have waxed or plucked the treatment area you would have to wait 6-8 weeks for follicles to produce a new hair.

I know it probably goes against everything you have ever been told when getting waxed but you do need to shave before laser, shock horror.  It’s a bit tricky to start but after 3-4 sessions the amount of hair dramatically reduces and this process will get so much easier.

how does laser hair removal work

[av_heading heading=’How Laser Hair Removal Works’ tag=’h1′ style=” size=” subheading_active=” subheading_size=’15’ padding=’10’ color=” custom_font=”][/av_heading]

A Laser machine emits energy in the form of heat and light that targets and heats up your hair follicle. This light is attracted to and absorbed by Melanin (the substance within your hair that contains the pigment or colour) the heat travels down the base of the hair to the root where the heat destroys the interconnectors that connect the hair root to the blood supply that nourishes it. If these interconnector cells are completely destroyed a new hair can’t grow.

This is a completely safe procedure as the laser will only absorb into these specific structures and will not damage the surrounding skin or tissues. All of our lasers are FDA approved and have undergone rigorous clinical testing to deem them safe and also to prove they are effective at permanently reducing hair. It is important to note that laser DOES NOT work on people with red, blond or grey hairs as there is no pigment present in the hair the laser has nothing to target so the energy has nothing to absorb into.

If there is a mixture of light and dark hairs in an area the laser will only target the darker ones and the lighter ones will remain.

[av_heading heading=’Why Is Laser Different To IPL’ tag=’h2′ style=” size=” subheading_active=” subheading_size=’15’ padding=’10’ color=” custom_font=”][/av_heading]

Lasers is different to IPL as lasers are more selective and more effective at targeting melanin within the hair than IPL. Per pulse of energy delivered by an IPL system only 30% of that energy is absorbed by Melanin, when using our Medical grade lasers 98% of that energy is absorbed by melanin. This means less sessions and better long term results.

  • Lasers penetrate deeper into tissue, IPLs penetrate approx 2mm beneath the skin, laser will penetrate 4-5mm, this is the ideal depth to target the structures that will disable a hair follicle.
  • Lasers have more advanced cooling systems, making treatment more comfortable.
  • Treatments with laser are quicker and more efficient.
  • IPLs cannot be used to treat darker skin types, laser can treat darker skins very successfully.

There is more published clinical evidence to support the effectiveness of laser treatment, our lasers have FDA approval (Food and Drug Administration in the US) and have to go through clinical testing to achieve such a standard.

discover the benefits of laser hair removal

[av_heading heading=’Benefits of Laser Hair Removal’ tag=’h1′ style=” size=” subheading_active=” subheading_size=’15’ padding=’10’ color=” custom_font=”][/av_heading]

So what really is the benefit of having laser hair removal done? Is it worth it and what can you expect after your treatments. In this post we have outlined some of the most common benefits in relation to having laser hair removal treatment.

In-Between Waxes Stage

Do you hate that in-between wax stage, you’re walking around in summer with thick black tights just to hide your furry legs, well not with laser. You don’t have to let your hair grow in-between waxing sessions, you can shave the hair as much as you like during your course of treatment

Ingrown Hairs, A Distant Memory

A couple of weeks after you wax are you fighting a losing battle trying to rid your bikini of ingrown hairs. Let’s face it there is only so much exfoliating you can do on a daily basis before you reach for the dreaded tweezers! You’ve put yourself through all the effort of growing your hair in the first place and getting it waxed just for it to look a bit unsightly a couple of weeks after. If this sounds familiar you should consider laser, really works, don’t waste any more time waxing as the prolonged effect of dealing with ingrown hairs can lead to scarring.

Shaving Rash, Disappears

If you have a heavy hair growth on your bikini chances are you suffer from skin irritation after you shave, this is pretty uncomfortable especially in the warmer summer months. Although you have to shave when having laser your hair reduces over your first couple of sessions and shaving becomes a much easier process. After 2-3 sessions of laser the amount of time spent shaving decreases dramatically and because the hair becomes so soft it doesn’t have the same effect on your skin.

Holidays, Get Better

Imagine always been ready to take off at a moment’s notice and not having to precision plan every wax session before you go. Do you find yourself bringing every hair removal product known to man on holiday? After laser holidays will never be the same again, you won’t need to worry about anything other than what bikini you’ll be wearing to show off your perfectly smooth skin.

Swimming, Jump Right In

Swimming is one of those activities that we have to expose a lot of skin. If we haven’t waxed or shaved we normally put off going, if we do go we feel everyone in the pool is looking at our furry bits! After laser you need not worry, you’ll be more than happy to show your smooth skin to anyone who wants to look.

Work Out Ready All Of The Time, No More Excuses

Do you regularly put off going to the gym because you haven’t shaved or waxed? Don’t let hair stand in your way of achieving your fitness goals. After laser you’ll be gym ready all of the time and will be racing to show off your perfectly preened body.

Don’t Sweat It, It’s Only Work

From Fitness Instructors to Firemen to Hairdressers it doesn’t matter what job you do, if your job involves any form of physical activity and having excess hair causes you to be conscious of your body and appearance we can help. Saying this in no way means you have to work in such an active environment to benefit from this treatment. If dealing with excess hair is a problem that you would like to do something about then laser hair removal is for you.

Underarm Shadow, We Can Make It Go Away For Good

So you’ve just shaved your underarm and notice you still have a shadow under your arm, you’re not alone. Laser will treat underarm hair very quickly and effectively, after about 3-4 sessions this will turn into something that used to happen, but not anymore.

Tan Glides Onto Perfectly Smooth Skin And Lasts Longer

Do you usually have to wait 2-3 days after you shave to apply fake tan mainly because your skin is still recovering from the effects of shaving? Do you then find yourself with stubble on your legs and find your tan settles in your hair follicle leaving your skin looking like you have black dots all over your legs. After laser you skin becomes a perfect canvas for fake tan ensuring you have the perfect tan application every time.

What You Can Expect

As a responsible clinic we feel it is important to be honest and open to all of our clients and explain every aspect of treatment so you are fully informed and know what you can expect. We feel it is important to manage your expectations so that you are happy with your final result. It is important to know that laser hair removal offers a permanent reduction in hair growth and does not guarantee 100% permanent hair removal in every hair follicle in a given area.

However results are nothing short of amazing, the majority of people will receive anything from a 80%+ reduction in hair growth and the hairs that remain will be soft, baby like hairs. These hairs would be targeted on subsequent top up treatments to ensure result is maintained. Hair free periods would typically lasts 5-6 months before these finer hairs would need to be maintained.

How Many Sessions You Will Realistically Need, The Honest Truth

We don’t believe in asking you to buy into the, after 6 sessions you’ll never have a blade of hair anywhere on your body for the rest of your life dream. That would be totally unfair and it is important that you know the good, bad and real results that can be achieved with laser. Throughout our many years of performing laser treatment we have never treated anyone who did not need some form of maintenance or top up treatments in the area after their initial 6 sessions. To receive 100% permanent hair removal from every follicle in the treated area would be impossible even when using medical grade lasers.

The truth and we believe in telling you the honest truth about laser is that it is extremely effective at dramatically removing and reducing hair but it is not a miracle 6 session cure, unfortunately this does not exist. The majority of people will need between 6-8+ sessions to achieve approx 80%+ reduction in hair in a given area and will need top-up or maintenance 2-3 times a year. This in a very generalised guide and does change due to factors such as hormonal conditions, darker skin types, genetics etc

How Often We Recommend Having Top Up Maintenance Treatments

Top up sessions are needed to maintain the level of reduction in hair you have achieved. You will notice some very fine hairs returning when you begin to leave longer gaps in-between sessions, this is completely normal. These finer hair are what we would be treating on top up treatments.

When we have completed a bulk amount of sessions and are happy with the treatment outcome we begin to leave longer time frames in-between each session. This allows follicles to fill with finer hairs that are left after treatment and these are the ones that need to be maintained a couple of times a year. These fine hairs where either not active and in the Anagen stage of growth at the time of treatment or did not reach the 45 degree temperature necessary for complete removal. We will have inevitably have missed growth cycles along the way so by leaving long gaps we will pick these up when adequate time is given for them to regenerate. Hairs left should be sporadic, fine and light.

Some Things You Should Know

Laser Hair Removal is a life changing treatment for many and offers a lasting reduction in unwanted body hair for many people who undertake this amazing treatment. Despite the many positive aspects to this amazing treatment there are a few things that you should be aware of before you opt into a course of treatments with any clinic.

Initial Laser Consultation

Are you getting an in depth consultation with an experienced consultant or a pushy sales person? It is important that your consultation is not about the sale for the clinic but about you and your suitability for laser treatment. Your results depend on this consultation. Always resist pay on the day of your consultation deals.

Hygiene

Ensure that your clinic is hygienic in all their laser treatments. Don’t be afraid to have a look at the hand piece of the machine to be used to ensure that it is clean before your treatment.

Medical Grade Lasers – (Not IPL)

It is important that you should always ask for a medical grade laser such as the Soprano XL (Diode) or the Cynosure Elite (Alexanderite) as these are the only lasers that will give lasting results from your treatments

Pain Free Laser Hair Removal – For Sensitive Areas

Laser Hair Removal should not be a painful process and the Soprano XL delivers pain free hair removal. This is also one of the main reasons why treatment times should not be reduced as the safety of the client is put at risk due to a higher risk of burning.

Different Types of Lasers

The best clinics have many different types of lasers for removing hair. The 3 main types are Diode (treats all skin types), Alexanderite (treats pale skin types) and ND Yag (treats darker skin types). It is important that your clinic has different lasers to ensure that you get the best results possible from your treatments.

Staff

Are all staff that are using lasers at the clinic highly trained and supervised. Do they have over 3 years experience in Laser Hair Removal and do they know how to safely get you the best results from your treatments?

Clinic’s Reputation

The best source of information to research any laser clinic, is to go to forums such as boards.ie, beaut.ie or any of the review websites like yelp.ie etc. and search for postings on the clinic. These forums are heavily moderated and commercial postings are not allowed by the clinics.

Dedicated Hair Removal Clinic

Ensure that you clinic specializes in laser hair removal ensuring that you have the best lasers, best treatments and best results.

Laser Hair Removal – Is it Permanent?

Laser Hair Removal is a Permanent Solution to unwanted body hair in the majority of cases. Most people will experience well over 80% hair reduction in their treated areas. The results will need to be maintained with follow up treatments a couple of times a year. The cost for these treatments is on an individual basis and can be discussed on your consultation.

Aftercare and Followup

It is important that should you not be 100% satisfied with any of your laser treatments that your clinic has a strong aftercare and followup procedure. These aftercare and followup consultations should always be with the same consultant you initially spoke with if possible.
