What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is generally considered to be an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorders happen when the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues and organs. When someone has vitiligo the immune system attacks the pigment cells causing them to loose their color. This condition may also be hereditary.

The most common areas white patches begin to form on the body are the underarm, elbows, genitals, hands and knees. On the face above the eyes and neck are the most common areas. These white patches of skin can spread over time and cover large sections of the body and face.

Can you have laser hair removal if you have vitiligo?

The severity of this condition will determine if you are suitable for laser hair removal. For mild cases laser may be an option but for more severe cases it may not. We would always recommend speaking to your GP first before starting.

This condition often starts to develop before the age of 20 and can be very  unpredictable. There are treatments that can help with this condition but it can not be cured.
